I was not a direct customer of Above All Smog, but I needed their help. I recently purchased a vehicle through a private party and unfortunately DMV wasn’t able to see that the emission had passed on their end. The previous car owner gave me the smog shop they used (Above All Smog) to see if I can retrieve the report that way. What is a smog check?
A smog check is a test that measures the amount of pollutants emitted by a vehicle and ensures that it meets the state's emissions standards.
Do I need a smog check?
A Smog Check is required every other year (biennially) as part of the vehicle registration process. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) registration renewal notice will indicate if a Smog Check is required. A Smog Check is also required when a vehicle changes ownership or when it is registered for the first time in California.
How long does a smog check take?
A smog check takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. Vehicles 1999 and older may take extra time.
What is a VIN verification ?
A VIN verification is a California DMV inspection required to get your out-of-state vehicle registered in the DMV database. It is a physical inspection of the vehicle – this inspection is documented on the REG31 / VIN verifier form shown below.
Can we provide VIN verification for all vehicles?
We cannot provide VIN verifications for the following vehicles:
- Salvaged vehicles
- Vehicles that have been junked
- Vehicles that are 1980 or newer that do not have a Federal Safety label
